Articulation at the Herbert
The Articulation Prize is a national competition for students aged between 16 and 19, whereby participants deliver a 10-minute presentation to an audience about a work of art, architecture or an artefact in a museum or gallery setting.
The Herbert has been a key partner to the Articulation programme since 2015, delivering Articulation ‘Discovery Days’ where students from local schools are invited to the museum to learn and develop their communication and presentation skills around a work of art from the collection.
Following the Discovery Days, schools are required to hold internal school heats to select a student to represent their school at regional heats which take place at museums and galleries across the UK.
Once again, the Herbert played host for this year’s regional heat where ten schools across the West Midlands entered students who delivered outstanding presentations about a range of artists including John Everett Millais, Paula Rego and Tracey Emin.
The chief adjudicator was Tatyana Serraino, Art Historian and Content Creator, who described the selection process for the winner as ‘extremely difficult as the standard was so high’. Nevertheless, the eventual winner was Joseph from Rugby Free School for his outstanding presentation on the work ‘Time’ by the artist Cristina Troufa. Joseph will now represent the West Midlands at the Articulation Grand Final which will take place at the British Library at the end of March.
