Following in the Footsteps of Soldiers
KS2
2 – 4.5-hours experience
Cost: Half-day school visits £200 per class (up to 32 pupils) and full-day visits £270 per class (up to 32 pupils).
Our experienced staff will guide you around the Lunt fort site on an interactive tour designed specifically for school groups. Children will be led around the fort by a costumed Roman guide and visit the huge circular wooden gyrus. In the granary, which houses the museum, your pupils will hear about the lives of soldiers at the fort, get the opportunity to handle Roman objects and discover more about the nature and function of Roman armour and weapons.
If you would like to make a full-day visit to the Lunt, you can add an exciting afternoon session learning Roman battle drills in the gyrus (4 ½ hours in total).
Led by a uniformed commander, your pupils will use wooden swords and shields to practise authentic Roman military manoeuvres. Great for letting off steam after lunch as well as experiential learning!
Teacher notes:
- Enhance your pupils’ opportunities and bolt-on the virtual Roman Life in the Legions workshop to support pre and post visit learning.
- Please note that visits to the Lunt Roman Fort use outdoor spaces, and we only adapt this in extreme weather (heavy snowfall, heavy rainfall, hail). As such children MUST come dressed appropriately for outdoor conditions. Waterproof and warm clothing in colder seasons. Light layers and suncream in the summer.
- We recommend children wear trainers for their visit, as they will be taking part in physical, outdoor activities.
- While alternative indoor activities can be provided, this is not possible during the peak season (23 March - 23 October) as we have multiple school groups on site at once.
