Coventry at War

Suitable for KS2

Overview

Through the use of discussion and role-play, pupils will discover what life was like for the people of Coventry during WW2. With a focus on the night of the Coventry Blitz in November 1940, there will be an opportunity for children to re-enact the blackout and to take part in a class ‘bombing raid’. Handling objects will include various items including an authentic ARP helmet, replica gas mask and replica incendiary bomb. Wider issues of the causes and impact of the war are also included in this session.

Breakdown of workshop

  • Session: How WW2 Started; Wardens and the Blackout; Warning Sirens; Gas Masks; Shelters; Incendiary Bombs; Firefighting; The Home Guard; Rebuilding Coventry

The video lasts for a total of about 30 minutes and is divided into small chapters so that teachers can pause it and carry out suggested activities in-between. Alternatively, teachers may decide to do some of the activities later.

The session is designed to be flexible in order to suit individual classes and timetables, and teachers may also decide to add their own activities.
