Exploring Paintings

Suitable for KS1/2

Overview:

Using key works of art from the Herbert’s collection, this session focuses on different kinds of paintings. Pupils will learn about famous artists such as L.S. Lowry, Joan Eardley, Ben Nicholson and George Shaw. Comparisons will be made between the styles and techniques of different artists and there will be suggestions for classroom art activities including practical drawing and painting ideas.

Breakdown of workshop:

  • Introduction to the session for teachers
  • Session: Portraits, Landscapes, Still-Life, Abstract Art

The video lasts for a total of around 30 minutes and is divided into small chapters so that teachers can pause and carry out suggested activities in-between, or teachers may decide to do some of these later. As well as practical ideas for making art, activities include class discussions.

The session is designed to be flexible in order to suit individual classes and timetables, and teachers may also decide to add their own activities.

As part of your virtual art workshop you can also complete the Arts Award Discover, where you pupils can achieve a nationally recognised qualification from Trinity College London. Click here to find out more.
